California State Parks® Seeks Public Input
for San Simeon State Park and Piedras Blancas Motel

San Simeon, CA – San Luis Obispo Coast District will hold a site visit to the Piedras Blancas Motel and a public workshop on Wednesday, November 14, 2007. The site visit will allow the public to visit both inside and outside the motel site. The workshop will be held at the Cambria Veterans Memorial Building and is designed to provide information and to obtain public input regarding the use of the State Park coastal property at the Piedras Blancas Motel site and the proposed name change of San Simeon State Park.

California State Parks is also requesting input from the public on a proposed name change of San Simeon State Park to Hearst San Simeon State Park. This State Park consists of parcels of property from the Santa Rosa Day Use Area northward to San Carpoforo Creek, including the 13 miles of coastline recently acquired by State Parks from the Hearst Ranch Conservation Agreement and the recently acquired Piedras Blancas Motel site from the Trust for Public Land.

The recommendation to rename San Simeon State Park to Hearst San Simeon State Park will not alter the current uses of the park as a place for high-quality outdoor recreational opportunities. “It is being proposed in recognition of the Hearst family and their many contributions to this area over the years, including their dynamic role in the stewardship of property along this part of the coastline,” stated Nick Franco, District Superintendent of San Luis Obispo Coast District.

“Like any recent land acquisition we are looking for public input to assist in establishing the use of the Piedras Blancas Motel site coastal property as part of the California State Parks system,” added District Superintendent Franco. “We continue to work to with the public to establish the use of this newly acquired property.”

The site visit will take place from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. at the Piedras Blancas Motel site. The workshop will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Cambria Veterans Memorial Building at 1000 Main Street, Cambria, CA. For more information please contact Nick Franco, District Superintendent at (805) 927-2065 or at nfranco@hearstcastle.com.
