House mouse Mus musculus
The house mouse is one of the most common mammalian pests. Originally from the Old World, they have been carried by ships to every corner of the globe. They are small and dark brown with a long, almost nude, unicolored tail. They have an unpleasant odor, unlike our native mice, and have a habit of destroying and soiling stored foods. They will eat almost anything edible: seeds, leaves, insects, and whatever they can find in the cupboard or pantry. House mice live within human habitations, and rarely venture outdoors where they become vulnerable to a wide range of predators. They can probably be found in or around many of the building and living areas of the reserve.
