Hoary bat Lasiurus cinereus
Hoary bats are dull, chocolate-brown bats of large size with white-tipped hairs, giving them a frosted appearance. They are active well before nightfall, capturing moths and flying beetles. These bats roost on the vertical trunks of trees, sometimes quite low to the ground, where they resemble a protruding part of the tree. Due to their relatively large size, they are very hardy, and may be seen foraging during the winter months as well. Watch for these more lightly colored bats during the early evening in the more open spaces of the reserve.
