California vole Microtus californicus
Voles superficially resemble mice, but they are stockier and have shorter legs, smaller eyes, and smaller ears which are partly hidden in their fur. California voles are dark black in color and have a faintly bicolored tail. They feed on many types of forbs and grasses, preferring tender leaves and young seeds. They are usually found in wet meadows, but they are common in most grassy agricultural areas as well. They are active through-out the day and night, so look for them near the fringes of grassy meadows or clearings in the forest.
