HABITAT Streams, ponds, lakes, rice fields, mud flats, and both fresh-and saltwater marshes.
POINT OF INTEREST The egret population was greatly reduced at the turn of the century by hunters who traded in the birds’ splendid plumes. Fortunately, it has now mostly recovered.
