DISTINGUISHING MARKS
Black plume tilting forward over head; blue-gray breast; buff scaling on belly.

DISTRIBUTION
Western United States and Mexico.

HABITAT
Coastal scrub, woods, foothills, and valleys.

 

POINT OF INTEREST
The state bird of California, this quail is extremely gregarious. In the fall, coveys can be as large as 200 birds; they disband for courting and nesting in the spring.
