DISTINGUISHING MARKS
Rufous back and tail; vertical “whiskers” on face.

DISTRIBUTION
Throughout North America.

HABITAT
Woodland borders, open fields, sparsely treed pastures, and deserts with giant cacti.

 
POINT OF INTEREST
The American kestrel was once misnamed the sparrow hawk. Sparrows are only a small part of its diet, and it is not a hawk, belong instead to the falcon family.
