Acorn Woodpecker
(Melanerpes formicivorus)
Acorn Woodpeckers are eye-catching birds with black and white faces and a red cap on the top of their heads. Their behavior is interesting to watch as they walk up and down tree trunks hammering at the bark with their beaks, hunting for insects in the layers of bark. Acorn Woodpeckers are known for drilling holes in Oak trees and placing acorns in the holes for “safe keeping”. The woodpecker will remove the acorns during the winter months and feed off the insects that are over-wintering inside the acorn! |
